Sonia Pierre Receives International Women of Courage Award
 
Sonia Pierre is a Dominican woman of Haitian ancestry who is advocating to have the government of the Dominican Republic recognize the human rights of Haitian Dominicans. Ms. Pierre is the founder of  the NGO organization known as MUDHA - Movement of Dominican-Haitian Women  ( Movimiento de Mujeres Dominicano-Haitiana )  She is the recipient of a 2010 International Women of Courage Award.

Discrimination against dark-skinned Dominicans and Dominicans of  Haitian ancestry is commonplace in the Dominican Republic. At Bookmanlit, we have taken the position of not travelling to the Dominican Republic until the government shows respect for the human rights of all Dominicans.
