More Than 250,000 People Have Left Port-au-Prince

The Haitian government estimates that more than 250,000 people have left the capital city of Port-au-Prince in the aftermath of the earthquake, and  have migrated to the other departments of Haiti:

1) The Artibonite Department (Gonaives) has received over 60,000 people.
2) The Grand Anse Department (Jeremie) has received over 55,000  people.
3) The Northwest Department (Port de Paix) has received over 30,000 people.
4) The Department of Nippes has received over 30,000 people.
5) East of Port-au-Prince has received  more than 25,000 people.
6) The Southern Department (Cayes) has received more than 20,000 people.
7) The Central Department (Hinche) has received  about 15,000 people.
8) The Northern Department (Cape Haitian) has received more than 13,000 people.
9) The Northeast Department ( Fort Liberte) has received over 7,000 people.
10) People are not migrating to the Southeast (Jacmel) area because this area was hit by the earthquake.

The influx of people from Port-au-Prince is putting tremendous strain on the resources of these regions. Many residents are sharing or renting any extra rooms they may have available.  Schools are making an effort to accomodate the huge influx of students.  Food prices have skyrocketed, and many people fear that before long, there will be a food shortage.

(Special thanks to Josephine Legros for the migration numbers)
These numbers are rough estimates but they are the best that we have.
