July Update: Although the 26 member Commission to oversee the rebuilding of Haiti has been formed, and has had its first meeting on June 17th, the international community has been very slow to honor its monetary pledges to the island nation. Haiti has received only 1% of the 10 billion dollars that were pledged for its reconstruction - a little over 100 million dollars.
The government of Haiti will be using this money ( given by Brazil, Norway, and Australia) to cover a budget deficit of about 170 million dollars. Many employees of the government had not been paid since the earthquake struck on January 12th.
Those who have been left homeless by the earthquake are still living in tent cities throughout Port-au-Prince. The government has been unable to relocate them to other places because it either cannot find land or it cannot afford to buy the land from private owners. The estimated number of homeless in Port-au-Prince is at 1.5 million people. It is estimated that another 700,000 people left Port-au-Prince to go live in the provinces. There is pressure being put on the government to act more quickly to prevent the loss of more lives in the event of a hurricane.
The government has scheduled presidential elections for November 28th. The next meeting of the Interim Commission for the Reconstruction of Haiti will take place on July 22, 2010.
