Haiti's Giving Trees
Deforestation in Haiti
Haiti's Charcoal Industry

The children's book, The Giving Tree, is the story of a tree that loved a little boy and provided him with all his needs: food, shade, shelter, transport... As the tree is finally cut down to no more than a stump, the tree tells the boy that she no longer has anything more to give him. She has simply become an old stump...

In Haiti, there are millions of boys like the one in Shel Silverstein's story, and there once were millions of trees like the Giving Tree. But we have cut down so many of our trees that
only one percent of Haiti's rainforest remains...

Blogger, Johnathan Auch documents this ongoing arborcide.

The Hope for Haiti Project
Coca Cola Invests in Haiti
Haiti Hope Mango Lime-Aid
Coca Cola along with its Haitian partner, Cola Courrone, will invest in Haiti's mango industry with the creation of the new drink, Haiti Hope Mango Lime-Aid. The new juice drink will be available this year, 2010, and will help provide jobs to 25,000 mango farmers. Other organizations partnering with Coca Cola in the Hope for Haiti Project include the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Odwalla, and Technoserve.  The project will provide Haiti with capital, technical assistance, research, and purchasing contracts. It will also encourage the planting of mango trees in Haiti for a sustainable mango industry.

A Song of Urgency

Nanpwen lavi ankò o
Mezanmi men nanpwen lavi ankò o
Vire isit, se yon dlo
Vire lòt bò, se yon lòt dlo o
N a bwote wòch n a konble lanmè o
Nanpwen lavi ankò o

There's no life anymore
My goodness, there's no life anymore
Here, there,
Everywhere is flooded
We'll have to carry rocks to fill the ocean
There's just no life anymore
